Main Idea

This is a upbeat drum and bass remix version of the original song. Our main idea will shows 3 main characters riding through the City of Peterborough through the embankment, City Centre and surrounding streets. We believe this will create an urban style of video. Adding shots from characters on BMX  bikes, skateboards and inline will add more excitement for the viewer, shown throughout the production in quick edits and short shots. We will also include a time lapse of a streetlight and surrounding scene, showing day to night; we will edit this with the song to go with the slow start build up adding an extra element to the video.

Group Meeting - 24/11/11

Today Sol and I had a group meeting on what we will be working on in the up and coming weeks. We decided that the production needs to start getting done so in today's lesson we will be creating the storyboard. We know this will be a long process as we are doing lots of short, little shots. Because of this we will carry this over and complete it in tomorrows lesson. After we have created the storyboard we will start the recording next week.

    Cassius Background Research

In 1988 MC Solaar, a French hip-hop artist gained help from Philippe Cerboneschi and Hubert Blanc-Francart on producing his albums. The duo, better known as Philippe Zdar and Boom Bass, created their first project together in 1991, called La Funk Mob, and then the following year started expermenting with a more electronic sound.

In 1996, the pair under the name of Cassius, created their first self published house music track "Foxxy". The moderate success they had after their track lead them to remix songs for acts such as Air and Daft Punk. In January 1999, they released their first mainstream single "1999" which stamped their name in the music market going into the UK Singles chart at number 7. This was closely followed by their debut album also named "1999" which inluded the track "Feeling for You" which was also in the Top 20 Singles chart.

From then on Cassius has been working on and creating new singles and have always been on a constant rise since 1999 earning more and more popularity gaining a larger fanbase. However along with "1999" there most notible track is "I Love You So" which was only released earlier this year.

    Background Research on Skream

Skream, (Oliver Dene Jones of West Wickham, Bromley, London) is a dubstep producer based Croydon. He was one of Dubstep’s first and most prominent producers; he has played an important role in the genre’s development. Skream is also part of the mainstream dubstep group, Magnetic Man along with Benga and Artwork.

As a teenager, Skream worked at Big Apple Records, a Croydon based record store that was at the centre of the early dubstep scene. Prior to this Skream had been acquainted with Hatcha another dubstep pioneer through Skream’s brother, who worked on a dance floor at the Big Apple Records studio. As a result of this, Hatcha was one of the first to play Skream dubplates. Skream began producing music at the age of 15 (using Fruity Loops) and claims to now have roughly 8000 songs in varying stages of development, including a number of early disco and funk inspired records. Skream's early productions were often with another alumnus of Big Apple, Benga, and are of a decidedly darker and less melodic nature than later releases.

Skream became a mainstream artist and begun to rise in popularity and fame. He has produced hundreds of songs that he has created from scratch but also very professional remixes of original songs.

    Target Audience Research

The song we producing our music video is Cassius - I Love You So (Skream Remix). The genre of this song is Drumstep, Drum n Bass and Dubstep together.

Mainly the people who listen to this genre of music are young adults aged around 16-24. One massive thing what affects the music you listen to is your sub-culture. The sub-culture that you would associate Drumstep with is young laid back people. The clothes you wear is also big part of subculture too, the type of clothes you would assoicate with this sub-culture is street wear. Because of this we need to have this in our Video of people in that age group wearing them type of clothes.

In this sub-culture which I am unsure how to name, things what are cool what people like are their clothes, tattoos, bikes/skateboards, girls, having fun with their friends, and the music. So when making the video we are going to encorporate all of these things into our video so with the visuals and the music in the background because thats what this type of people are like

    Group Meeting - 3/11/11

Today me and Sol held a group meeting to talk about our final ideas of what we wanted to do for our video. Although we were keen on our original ideas, we were both thought about what we were doing a decided it need a change. Sol suggested to change the song to Cassius - I Love You So (Skream Remix) and after listening to the song it seemed right for the style of video we are looking to create.

We know if we do this we will need to change around with the visuals of the video too so we will be looking finalise ideas for that soon

Codes and Conventions of a Music Artist Website

The main thing that the website needs to have to be effective is that it has to be clear, logical and easy to navigate.

As you can see from the Skrillex website on the left it is very clearly laid out. At the top of the page says the artists name in the same font and style as it always is so its easily recognisable. Underneath that are the hyperlinks leading you to all of the parts of the website.

Although this website does mainly follow normal codes and convetions it does go against them occasionally. In this case the Skrillex website doesnt have the normal grid system, its laid out more like a blog with live and updates people will be intersted in. At the side of the website it has some of the main hyperlinks from the top of the page but with more information about it. For example, with "Tour" it has the upcoming dates in it.

    Analysing Music Videos

Andrew Goodwins 6 features of Music Videos

In Goodwins book Dancing in the Distraction Factory Andrew Goodwin points out characteristics and features that can be found in music videos. Looking at a selection of music videos which can be recognised?

    1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.(e.g. stage performance in metal videos, dance routine for boy/girl band, aspiration in Hip Hop).

    2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.
The lyrics are represented with images.(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting)

    3. There is a relationship between music and visuals.
The tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music.(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

    4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across thier work
    (a visual style).

    5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking
(screens within screens, mirrors, stages, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

    6. There are often intertextual reference
(to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc.)

    Introduction

This year in my A2 Media we will be making a Music Promo Video after looking at all different types of research and planning to see what the usual codes and conventions are. In my group I will be working with Sol Ilett. We know what works well and what dosent work well with us working together from the AS Media course so this will give us a headstart when going into the production. We are sticking to the same group name as last year, Sharrison Productions
